This is the website of the No Secret Police in Durango Election Committee. Until its termination, this website address was used by the No Secret Police Citizen’s Initiative Petition Committee. These two committees are distinct from one another in purpose, membership and reporting.
A citizen’s initiative began February 4, 2026 for a Durango Colorado ordinance that prohibits masking of law enforcement officers and requires visible identification, keeps policing local and returns constitutionality and trust to policing and the People.
Nothing about the No Secret Police Citizen’s Initiative Ordinance has been hidden. No one on the Citizen’s Initiative Petition Committee was paid. What happened in Durango was simple: people showed up, spoke face-to-face with their neighbors, and succeeded in getting more than 1,700 residents signed on to a petition in just 30 days. Circulators had their say, the ordinance had its say, and now the people deserve their say. That is how democracy works. So, let’s vote on it. We vote Yes! But let’s talk about it. Voting is the conversation.
The short story is that by early March the citizen’s initiative had collected the required signatures. The Durango City Council had 30 days to adopt the ordinance or put it out to special election. City Council declined to consider the ordinance and scheduled the special election for June 30 (the same day as the Colorado Primary) and filed a court petition against the circulars as a group and Mick Souder and Ted Wright as representatives and that lawsuit challenges the results of the election . Why the lawsuit? Good question. However you want to spin it the answer to that question reveals that the City is knowingly compromising the election through a court action before it takes place. The lawsuit needs to be dismissed. The election needs to be saved. Your vote needs to count and your voice needs to be heard.
What has been missing from the City’s argument against this ordinance is anythingthat isn’t rooted in fear. We are asking you to fearlessly vote Yes and reclaim your voice because this really is a Special Election. Read the rest of the story in Community Interactions. Talk to others.
